As already mentioned, the 2022 Kia K5 and the 2022 Hyundai Sonata are sister cars which means they share a lot in common. The K5 is powered by either a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine or a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine - both of which also feature on the Sonata. However, while the Kia K5 gets the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine on the base trim, the Hyundai Sonata gets it on the mid-spec SEL Plus trim, starting at $31,150, while the base SE and SEL models have to do with a non-turbo 2.5-liter engine.
Toward the top, the 2022 Kia K5 GT trim shares the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with the 2022 Hyundai Sonata N Line and the highest-spec Sonata N Line Night, with all three models pushing out an impressive 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. However, the K5 manages to deliver better fuel economy while driving in the city or on the highway.
The K5 also offers better interior passenger rooms at 105.3 cubic feet over the 104.4 cubic feet on the 2022 Hyundai Sonata. Another area where the 2022 Kia K5 has a clear edge over the 2022 Hyundai Sonata is the availability of All-Wheel Drive on the LXS, GT-Line, and GT trims. The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is an FWD-only affair.
The Kia K5 also gets a sportier design with unique yellow LED Daytime Running Lights DRLs. And if this isn’t brag-worthy, the 2022 Kia K5 GT trim punches above its weight by outperforming the BMW 330i Sedan in acceleration and overall handling performance.
